Flex Testing of Hypodermic Needles
Hypodermic needles are hollow, metal tubes typically used in conjunction with a syringe to inject or extract liquids directly from the blood stream. These needles come in a variety of sizes, shapes, and points, depending on their real-world application. Needles used in blood donation must be large enough to easily collect blood in an optimum time and without damaging any blood cells, whereas needles used for intravenous (IV) drug delivery must be small enough to insert into a small vein on a patient's hand.
Both the gauge of the needle and the material from which it is made can have a large impact on how it behaves in a flex test. A micro bend fixture, commonly used for electronics testing, may be used to test the flexural properties of hypodermic needles. Depending on the requirements of the test, lower anvil separation may be adjusted on all of our flex fixtures.
Further, if testing in a bath or heated enclosure is required, which would be the case if the specimens are sensitive to temperature change from ambient to 37° C or to hydration, then the fixture can be supplied in stainless steel to prevent rust. The fixture can be easily adapted to our standard BioBath or BioBox, which can both maintain physiological conditions of 37° C.
We recommend Bluehill® Software with the TestProfiler Module to load and unload the specimen, and to obtain a typical hysteresis curve. The software can provide for the load-deflection data on both segments of the curve, as well as a variety of additional calculations, such as slope, that will allow for direct comparison of a variety of different specimens

BioBox POD
Within the medical device industry, regulatory agencies often test internally-based devices and implants in a physiological state. The Instron® BioBox meets the growing trend of testing actual medical devices and biomaterials at body temperature (37°С). For large or long devices, testing in а liquid may not bе practical. As an alternative, testing inside а controlled air environment at body temperature provides а powerful solution. The BioBox can bе incorporated as а standard item on а new single column frame or in selected models already in operation. This bох permits the full travel test of sutures, catheter tubings, latex gloves, and а wide variety of other devices and biomaterials at physiologically relevant temperatures.
