Impact on soccer shoes outsoles
“Football boots” or “soccer shoes” are an item of footwear worn well know by million of people all around the world. Nevertheless, today these accessories are subject to much research, development, sponsorship and marketing, fully involving the multi-national global industry.
A lot of efforts of the researchers of the field are focused on the outsole. This is the most important piece a player can own and also the most difficult to choose. The type of outsole will have a direct effect on the function of the foot. A good shoe should give players support, stability, grip and traction. The type of the outsole can be determined by the field on which it will be used (soft, firm or hard ground, indoor, etc.).
A CEAST’s customer had the necessity to investigate the mechanical and impact properties of the soccer outsoles he was producing. The outsoles have been placed on a rigid support, with a thin rubber plate in between, to better simulate the effect of the ground.
Impact tests have been carried out by means of a CEAST 9350 drop tower with an instrumented tup. Thanks to the high versatility of such a instrument, two different kind of tests have been performed.
The first, by using a flat circular insert, rebounding on the outsoles. This configuration has been used to simulate the effect on the outsoles during rushes, running, jumps, etc.
The second type of tests have been performed by using an hemispherical insert and puncturing the specimens in different spots, to better investigate the material properties and the boundary and links between different materials composing the outsole.
The results obtained provide a powerful instrument to improve the efficiency of the products for both the producers and the end-users.
CEAST Data Acquisition and Analysis
The new CEAST DAS 64K is a state-of-the-art Data Acquisition System designed for impact testing instruments. Compatible with the full range of CEAST impact testing systems, including pendulum type machines (CEAST 9000 Series) and drop towers (CEAST 9300 Series), it’s the key for instrumented impact testing. The DAS 64K also enables the data collection from instrumented tups or hammers on older models and non-CEAST impact machines.

CEAST 9300 Series
Impact resistance is one of the most important properties for component designers to consider, as well as the most difficult to quantify. Impact resistance is a critical measure of service life and more importantly these days, it involves the perplexing problem of product safety and liability. With the combined experience of Dynatup® and CEAST, Instron® has more than 80 years experience in designing impact testing systems to simulate real-life impact conditions.
